Does Recycling Actually Work?

This Monday I am going talk about recycling. This summer for my media arts class we had to write an article about anything we wanted to. I decided to write about if recycling actually works, so here is the article.

Across the world millions of people have started to recycle to better the health of our planet. How many have contained living their lives without recycling. They think that recycling isn’t worth it for many reasons the first and most important reason would have to be, does it actually work?

On June 30, 1996 a columnist named John Tierney published an article called “Recycling is Garbage” in The New York Times. It caused a divide between people wondering if recycling was really worth it.

In the article he stated that “mandatory recycling programs offer mainly short term benefits to a few groups, politicians, public relations, consultants, environmental organizations and waste handling corporations while diverting money from genuine social and environmental problems. Recycling may be the most wasteful activity in modern America.”

It Basically means that he thinks that recycling is a waste of money because it takes a lot more money and double the energy to recycle, recyclables. It would mean that taxpayers would have to pay more money to get this done than to dispose regular garbage.

Even though this is true we should still recycle. It helps the planet and everyone in it. There are also the other two R’s Reuse, and Reduce. We should consider these two options before recycling because they can lower our garbage and recycling piles so no one will have to worry about paying more taxes or hurting the planet.
